While the actions of youth may seem “crazy” to you, it is important to remember youth are rational and their actions are consistent with their value system. What you want to accomplish is getting the youth to explore their own values from a different perspective. Then it is possible for them to reconsider their values and behaviors. Otherwise, youth will know you are looking for a certain answer and give you one that sounds good, but they do not believe.

The goal is collaborative or mutual discovery rather than preaching the truth at young people. Young people have received so much false information/truth from so many different sources: parents, schools, media, cops, good friends, bad friends, etc. they have had to build distrust defense mechanisms. Such defense mechanisms can gradually be broken down through trusting relationships where mutual discovery of information and truths is made.

The questions are designed to get kids to share their honest thoughts and feelings so they can be discussed. The stories are a means to an end, self-discovery. It is easier for young adults to talk about what those in the story should or should not have done, than to share about their own lives and decisions as it is less personal. But by sharing, the leader can gain some insight into their beliefs and values.
